Secondary School Open Houses 2026: Dates, What to Ask, and What to Do If You Missed Them

Short answer

Most open houses for the 2027 Sec 1 intake are still ahead of you. The big dates on the official list are Saturday 14 Nov, Saturday 21 Nov and Saturday 28 Nov 2026. PSLE results are tentatively out on 24 or 25 Nov, so the 14 and 21 Nov visits happen before you see the score, and the 24 to 28 Nov tours and webinars happen while you are filling in your six choices.

Dates below come from the MOE SchoolBag list, accurate as of 28 October 2026. Schools change timings, so click the school name and check its website before you go.

How open house week fits with results week

• Before results (14 and 21 Nov): use these to shortlist. You cannot rank schools you have not seen, so aim for 8 to 10 on your list and narrow to six later.

• Results week (tentatively 24 or 25 Nov): the S1 Portal opens at 11.30am on results day and runs for about 7 days. Several schools, including Crest, Spectra, Assumption English, Yio Chu Kang and Kuo Chuan, hold tours or webinars from 24 to 28 Nov.

• After you submit: posting results are tentatively Fri 18 Dec. See the full list of dates in our P6 to Sec 1 timeline.

10 questions to ask at an open house

Most parents leave with a tote bag and a brochure. These questions get you answers the brochure will not give you.

1. How many Sec 1 students get a place in their first-choice CCA? Ask how many sessions a week it takes, and what happens to students who do not get their first choice.

2. How are Sec 1 classes and subject levels arranged? Under Full SBB, ask how the timetable works and how a student can move to a different level later.

3. What does a typical Sec 1 week look like? Homework, tests, project work and when the school day ends.

4. What happens if my child struggles in the first term? Ask about remedial support, buddy systems and who the first point of contact is.

5. What do students who are doing well get? Look for enrichment, competitions and subject extension.

6. What subject options and programmes are offered in upper Sec? Ask about entry requirements, not just the names.

7. Where do your Sec 4 students go next? JC, poly or ITE, and how the school prepares them for each.

8. How do students get to school, and how long does the commute take? Take the actual route at 6.30am before you rank the school.

9. How does the school handle bullying, stress and well-being? Ask to speak to a counsellor or form teacher if you can.

10. How does the school communicate with parents, and what extra costs should we plan for? Devices, CCA, trips and uniforms add up.

Make the visit count

• Bring your child and watch how they react to the students, the canteen and the CCA booths. Chat about it in the car afterwards and take their view seriously.

• Talk to current students, not just teachers. Ask what they enjoy most and what they would change.

• MOE advises using all six school choices, including two to three schools where your child's PSLE score is better than the school's previous year's cut-off point, and ranking your preferred school higher in case a tie-breaker is needed (SchoolBag).

Missed the open house? You can still

• Call or email the school. Many offer appointment-based tours or Q&A sessions. Yio Chu Kang, for example, arranges guided tours on 25 and 26 Nov, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., by appointment (book by 20 Nov).

• Check the school website and social pages. Many run virtual or e-open houses, and MOE recommends visiting schools' websites and social media pages as well as their open houses.

• Use SchoolFinder. The MOE SchoolFinder lets you compare schools by PSLE score ranges, programmes, subjects and CCAs.

• Talk to families who are already there. An older sibling, a neighbour or a friend's child in Sec 1 will tell you things a talk will not.

• Join a webinar or tour in results week. Check the table above for 24 to 28 Nov sessions.
