How to Choose a Secondary School in Singapore: 8 Questions Every Parent Should Ask

After PSLE results are released, every parent in Singapore faces the same high-stakes question: which secondary school? The school choice exercise gives your child 6 school options, and the order matters. Most parents start by looking at rankings or prestige. That is the wrong place to start. Here are 8 better questions to ask.

1. What Does My Child Actually Care About?

Before you look at any school, sit down with your child and list three things they genuinely care about — a sport, an art form, a subject, a type of community. The school that best supports those things will produce the most engaged and motivated version of your child. A motivated student in a good school will always outperform a miserable student in a great one.

2. What Stream and COP Does My Child Qualify For?

Use your child’s PSLE Score to filter schools by stream eligibility. There is no point shortlisting a school where the Express COP is significantly lower than your child’s score — they will be placed in NA even if a higher score was achievable elsewhere. Check the MOE school finder and the most recent published COPs for accurate data.

3. How Far is the School?

Distance matters more than parents often admit. A child who commutes 90 minutes each way to a prestigious school loses 3 hours of study, sleep, and recovery time daily. A school 20 minutes from home gives your child more time to be a student and a human being. Proximity is a legitimate and underrated factor in school choice.

4. What are the School’s CCAs Like?

CCAs are not optional in Singapore secondary school — they are mandatory and they contribute to the DSA application if your child plans to enter JC. Research the specific CCAs at each school, not just the list but the quality. Check SYF results, sports achievements, and whether the CCA your child wants is genuinely active and competitive.

5. What Applied Learning Programmes (ALPs) are Offered?

MOE requires all secondary schools to offer an Applied Learning Programme — a specialised enrichment track beyond the core curriculum. These range from aerospace engineering to culinary arts to social entrepreneurship. If your child has a clear interest, look for a school whose ALP aligns with it. This is a differentiator often overlooked in the school choice process.

6. What is the School’s Culture and Values?

Every school has a distinct culture. Some are intensely academic and competitive. Others emphasise holistic development and community. Some have a strong religious character. Visit the school’s open house. Speak to students. Read the principal’s message carefully — it tells you a lot about what the school actually prioritises.

7. Does My Child Have Friends Going There?

This matters more for some children than others, but social belonging in early secondary school is a real factor in academic performance and mental well-being. A child who enters secondary school knowing a few familiar faces settles in faster and has a more stable foundation to build from.

8. What Do Former Students Say?

The most honest information about any school comes from students who attended it — particularly those 3 to 5 years out who have the perspective to evaluate it clearly. Ask in parent forums, talk to older siblings of your child’s classmates, or reach out through your network. Real student experience is worth more than any ranking.

The best secondary school for your child is the one where they will be engaged, supported, and stretched — not the one with the most impressive name.
